Valencia city council gave Okuda San Miguel the honor of creating the main effigy for the city’s Fallas festival. The 25-meter-high sculpture is one of the highlights of his career as an artist. The work was entitled “Equilibri Universal” and its presence highlighted the similarities between the festival, which has UNESCO World Heritage status, and contemporary art in public spaces. Both are popular, exist in the streets, have multiple dimensions and are transient. Watching a year’s worth of work consumed by the flames was, in the words of the artist, “one of the most intense experiences of my life, extremely positive and very special”.
